Building Momentum

How Hitting Publish Builds the Muscle of Creation

Building Momentum

This feels like it's been the topic of many of my newsletters recently - momentum, or some form of building a routine for writing. It hasn't worked in the past. Well, it has worked a little, but previous attempts at building momentum didn't lead to the kind of change I sought.

That's been changing recently. When I was driving home from work on November 1st, I created a challenge for myself to post every day of the month about something I am thankful for.

The good news - I did it! I posted 30 times in 30 days. I even had a few long travel days mixed into work football games and Thanksgiving, and I still was able to get that done. Some posts might have been published at 11:00 pm, but part of the point was to build the muscles to keep writing for people.

About a week into November, I came across some of the work of Seth Godin, which he calls "Ship It" - I even wrote about that on Day 21.

Here's my encouragement to you. Ship it! If you have the desire to produce something, whether you want to start a blog, a podcast, or your art - do it! The best way to be creative is to have others see your work.

I have a handful of blog posts that I have written that are a copy/paste/publish away from being live on my site, but I wasn't good at pulling the trigger when I wrote them. I wasn't ready to ship my creative work.

The last month, however, has built that muscle in me. Shipping creative work helped me develop my skills as a writer. I don't want to write poorly, but forcing myself to ship work every day helped me to not get stuck/not publish because my writing might not have been perfect.

We all have a story to tell and there is someone out there that needs you to share your story. So do it - ship the work!

30 Days of Thankfulness

Scripture Verses

There has been a theme that I've been seeing in Scripture over the last month: encouragement that even in the storms of life that God is still there. Whether it is in Psalm 42 like we looked at in church today or in Daniel, I find great encouragement in God's presence no matter the circumstances.

“If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” (Daniel 3:17-18)
